Preserving Your Home's Architectural Value

Congratulations!  If you are among the fortunate few who own an historic home in the Town of Pelham, you have been given a special opportunity and responsibility as the steward of a property that is part of this historic community.  We hope that you will use the resources here to learn about the history of your home, understand the architectural style and adopt preservation techniques and best practices in its care and improvement.  Among the most important architectural elements in any historic home are original windows.  Learn why they should always be preserved and restored and never replaced.

The U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service publishes Preservation Briefs that provide excellent guidance on preserving and restoring historic buildings, including on the Repair of Original Windows, Appropriate Exterior Extensions to Historic Buildings, Repairing Interior Plaster and Preserving Historic Ceramic Tile Floors.

The Old House Journal hosts several bulletin boards where readers have posted restoration ideas and information.

Avoid these common mistakes that can rob your home of its architectural integrity

The Society has developed a substantial collection of books on architecture and historic preservation as part of its "Pelham By Design" Collection -- a special section in the Pelham Public Library, located at the corner of Wolfs Lane and Colonial Avenue.  These books have been specially selected by preservation specialists to assist you with your home restoration project.  Click on the icon above to see a complete list of these books.

Many of our members have had experience in undertaking home improvement projects that have respected the architectural history and integrity of their homes.  The above bulletin board contains ideas and suggested resources for preservation and restoration projects.

(Please Note:  The Pelham Preservation Society does not recommend or endorse any of the products or services noted on this bulletin board;  homeowners should make an independent determination of the appropriate provider for specific work to be undertaken.)

Ideas and information to help you get started in finishing the interior of your historic home.
